behind
Eastlake
City
Hall
in
Eastlake
,
Ohio
. The
memorial
was
dedicated
on
September
11
,
2002
in
memory
of the
tragic
events
of
September
11
,
2001
,
when
terrorists
hijacked
three
airliners
and
crashed
them in to the
World
Trade
Center
in
New
York
City
, the
Pentagon
in
Washington
,
D.C.
, and a
field
in
Shanksville
,
Pennsylvania
.
Eastlake
,
through
the
efforts
of
Mayor
Dan
Diliberto
, was
one
of
fewer
than
150
sites
nationwide
to
receive
large
pieces
of the
remains
of the
World
Trade
Center
. In
addition
to the
two
strips
of
twisted
steel
,
one
six
feet
high
and the
other
four
feet
, the
memorial
contains
a
few
chips
of
granite
from the
facing
of the
World
Trade
Center
and a
portion
of a
lamppost
that
once
stood
in
front
of the
buildings
. The
memorial
also has a
two-foot
long
piece
of
marble
from the
Pentagon
, and
earth
and
grass
from
Shanksville
,
Pennsylvania
.
Eastlake
is
the
only
city
in the
country
with
pieces
from
all
three
places
. The
30
foot
by
30
foot
monument
is
shaped
to
represent
the
Pentagon
.
Inside
the
perimeter
the
grass
represents
Pennsylvania
and the
two
12-foot
high
concrete
blocks
represent
the
Twin
Towers
. In
addition
,
three
pieces
of
marble
from the
World
Trade
Center
are
cemented
in the
frame
of the
Monument
with the
lamppost
and
steel
beams
in
front
of the
concrete
blocks
.
