stereoview

Anna
Dean
Farm
Barn
#3
.
Measuring
756
feet
(230.43
m)
in
length
,
it
was the
longest
barn
in the
world
from the
time
it
was
constructed
in
1912
until
it
was
demolished
in
1958
. This
enormous
barn
housed
more
than
600
head
of
O
.
C
.
Barber's
prize-winning
Guernsey
cattle
. The
photograph
measures
3.5
"
x
7
"
(8.89
x
17.78
cm)
.
Ohio
Columbus
Barber
was
born
in
1841
and was the
town
founder
of
Barberton
,
Ohio
and
President
of
Barber's
Diamond
Match
Company
factory
, from
which
he
retired
in
1909
. In his
retirement
, he
took
on
another
large-scale
project
in his
creation
of the
3,500-acre
Anna
Dean
Farm
,
just
outside
Barberton
,
Ohio
(within
the
present-day
city
limits
of
Barberton)
. The
Anna
Dean
Farm
estate
included
an
elaborate
fifty-two
room
French
Renaissance
Revival
style
mansion
.
Barber
also
built
enormous
castle-like
barns
to
house
his
high-quality
livestock
and
hired
experts
to
manage
each
type
of
animal
. The
farm
also
included
13-acres
of
green
houses
, a
dairy
processing
plant
, a
flour
mill
,
power
houses
, a
farm
office
, and a
hotel
to
house
farm
employees
.
When
O.C
.
Barber
died
in
1920
he had
planned
to
give
Anna
Dean
Farm
to
Western
Reserve
University
,
which
would
continue
the
farm
experiment
as an
agricultural
school
.
However
,
due
to
financial
difficulties
,
Western
Reserve
was not
able
to
support
an
agricultural
school
, and
therefore
, the
farm
was
shut
down
.
It
was
sold
to the
A.O
.
Austin
family
in
1926
. The
family
lived
in the
mansion
until
1964
,
when
A.O
.
Austin
died
. In
1965
the
mansion
was
demolished
.
