This
photograph
shows
a
celebration
in
honor
of
Archbishop
William
Henry
Elder's
twenty-fifth
anniversary
as a
priest
. The
chapel
at
Mount
St
.
Mary
Seminary
of the
West
was
specially
decorated
for the
occasion
. This
photograph
measures
10
by
8.75
inches
(25.4
by
22.23
cm)
.
Elder
(1819-1904)
was
born
in
Baltimore
,
Maryland
. He
studied
in
Maryland
and
Rome
before
being
ordained
in
1846
. He
served
as a
professor
at
Mount
St
.
Mary's
College
in
Maryland
until
1857
,
when
he was
appointed
bishop
of
Natchez
.
During
the
Civil
War
, he was
arrested
for not
having
prayers
for the
president
of the
United
States
publicly
recited
in the
churches
of the
diocese
. His
conviction
was
overturned
. In
1880
,
Elder
was
appointed
coadjutor
bishop
with the
right
of
succession
after
Archbishop
John
Baptist
Purcell
submitted
his
resignation
to the
Pope
.
Purcell's
brother
had
operated
a
bank
for
Catholic
immigrants
that
failed
.
Elder
reorganized
the
administration
of the
archdiocese
,
established
the
office
of
archdiocesan
chancellor
, and
began
collecting
annual
reports
from
all
churches
and
institutions
. He also
saw
the
lawsuits
resulting
from the
Purcell
failure
to their
finishes
. The
first
Catholic
seminary
in
Cincinnati
,
known
as the
Seminary
of
Saint
Francis
Xavier
, was
established
by
Bishop
Edward
Fenwick
in
1829
. The
Athenaeum
,
now
Xavier
University
, was
founded
in
1831
, and the
seminarians
attended
classes
there
until
a
new
seminary
was
established
in
Brown
County
in
1839
. The
seminary
returned
to
Cincinnati
in
1845
and
students
attended
classes
at the
Athenaeum
or at the
Bishop's
residence
. In
1851
,
Archbishop
Purcell
established
Mount
St
.
Mary
Seminary
of the
West
in
Price
Hill
, in
Cincinnati's
west
end
. The
school
closed
after
the
private
bank
operated
by the
Archbishop's
brother
Edward
Purcell
failed
.
It
was
reopened
in
1887
.
