photograph
from
1902
.
It
was
started
in
1833
as a
cold
blast
furnace
. The
cold
blast
method
used
charcoal
to
fuel
the
furnace
. The
Hecla
Iron
Furnace
was
one
of the
best-known
furnaces
in the
United
States
.
It
gained
much
of its
fame
during
the
Civil
War
when
iron
from
Hecla
Furnace
was
used
for
armor
on the
gunboats
that
stormed
Fort
Henry
and
Fort
Donaldson
.
Perhaps
the
most
famous
weapon
made
of
Hecla
iron
was the "
Swamp
Angel
"
which
threw
a
100-pound
shell
5
1/2
miles
,
which
was
considered
a
remarkable
feat
in the
1860s
.
Hecla
Furnace
was
reconstructed
as a
hot
blast
furnace
in the
1890s
. The
hot
blast
method
used
coal
to
fuel
the
furnace
,
which
produced
hotter
heat
than the
charcoal
.
Hecla
was
one
of
more
than
thirty
pig
iron
furnaces
that
operated
in the
Hanging
Rock
Iron
Region
. This
region
includes
the
Ohio
counties
of
Lawrence
,
Jackson
,
Scioto
, and
Vinton
as
well
as
northeastern
Kentucky
and the
western
part
of
West
Virginia
. The
Hanging
Rock
Region
was
rich
in
iron
ore
and
timber
needed
to
produce
the
charcoal
that
fueled
the
furnaces
.
