Loop
pattern
. The
mustard
container
is
2.5
inches
in
diameter
and
2.75
inches
tall
(6.35
by
6.99
cm)
and the
lid
is
2.5
inches
by
2
inches
(6.35
by
5.08
cm)
. A
covered
mustard
pot
is
a
piece
of
tableware
commonly
used
around
the
turn
of the
twentieth
century
.
Fancy
Loop
was
one
of the
few
patterns
that was
produced
in
emerald
green
.
It
was
modeled
after
cut
glass
,
which
was
popular
at the
time
but
expensive
to
make
.
Pressed
glass
is
made
by
pouring
molten
glass
into a
mold
and
applying
pressure
to
force
the
glass
into the
desired
shape
.
Augustus
H
.
Heisey
(1842-1922)
founded
the
company
that
bore
his
name
in
1896
.
Born
in
Germany
,
Heisey's
family
emigrated
to
Pennsylvania
in
1843
. He
began
his
career
in
glassmaking
in
1861
,
working
for
several
glass
companies
in the
state
.
During
the
Civil
War
,
Heisey
served
in the
155th
Regiment
Pennsylvania
Volunteers
. In the
1890s
, he
decided
to
start
his
own
company
and
selected
Newark
for his
factory
because
natural
gas
and
low-cost
labor
were
abundant
. The
factory
,
located
at
301
Oakwood
Avenue
,
opened
in
1896
. In its
early
years
, the
company
made
only
pressed
ware
table
items
in a
variety
of
patterns
and
colors
. In the
twentieth
century
,
Heisey
expanded
its
production
to
include
blown
glassware
,
which
is
shaped
by
hand
tools
and
craftsmen's
lungs
.
Augustus
Heisey's
sons
ran
the
company
after
his
death
. The
factory
ceased
production
in
1957
.
