Glenn
Curtiss
after
landing
at
Cedar
Point
and
surrounded
by a
crowd
after
a
record-setting
flight
from
Euclid
Beach
in
Cleveland
on
August
31
,
1910
.
Retractable
landing
gear
had not
yet
been
invented
,
so
Curtiss
flew
a
plane
with
wheels
despite
flying
over
water
,
so
he
could
land
near
the
waters
edge
and
coast
up
to the
beach
.
Curtiss's
plane
,
which
he
built
himself
, also had
two
elevation
controls
,
which
can
be
seen
in the
foreground
of the
photograph
.
Later
airplanes
only
included
one
elevation
control
after
the
second
was
found
to be
unnecessary
. In
1910
flight
was
still
an
amazing
feat
to
most
Americans
.
Resort
owners
frequently
hired
aviators
to
perform
stunts
and
aerial
feats
to
attract
crowds
to their
venues
, and
fees
for
such
events
helped
aviators
finance
their
planes
,
repairs
,
construction
.
Curtiss's
flight
on
August
31
,
1910
over
Lake
Erie
was the
longest
over-water
flight
to
date
. His
flight
helped
to
demonstrate
to the
public
that
flying
would
one
day
be
safe
and
reliable
.
Curtiss
(1878-1930)
spent
much
of his
youth
building
gasoline
engines
for
motorcycles
he
raced
, and
Curtiss
became
known
as the "
fastest
man
on
earth
" in
1907
when
he
set
a
motorcycle
speed
record
of
136.3
miles
per
hour
. His
motorcycle
engines
were
known
for their
light
weight
.
Balloonist
Thomas
Baldwin
asked
Curtiss
to
build
an
engine
for
use
in his
airship
,
which
became
the
first
powered
dirigible
in the
United
States
.
After
this,
other
balloonists
began
asking
Curtiss
for
engines
for
airships
. The
first
United
States
Army
aircraft
, the
SC-1
, was
powered
by a
Curtiss
engine
. In
1907
Curtiss
joined
with
Alexander
Graham
Bell
to
found
the
Aerial
Equipment
Association
,
which
designed
and
built
several
aircraft
,
including
the
White
Wing
,
which
was the
first
American
aircraft
equipped
with
ailerons
. The
NC-4
made
the
first
transatlantic
crossing
in
1919
.
During
World
War
I
, the
Curtiss
Airplane
and
Motor
Company
was the
largest
aircraft
manufacturer
in the
world
,
producing
more
than
10,000
aircraft
(the
equivalent
of
over
100
per
day)
. In
1929
, the
Curtiss-Wright
Corporation
was
established
after
a
merger
of
twelve
affiliates
.
