Description
This
photograph
shows
the
bronze
two-figured
statue
of
Johann
Wolfgang
Goethe
(1749-1832)
and
Friedrich
von
Schiller
(1759-1805)
,
two
of
Germany's
greatest
poet-philosophers
, in the
German
Cultural
Garden
in
Cleveland
. The
garden
was
dedicated
on
June
2
,
1929
,
when
the
Goethe-Schiller
statue
was
relocated
as the
centerpiece
of the
garden
from its
original
location
in
Wade
Park
. This

One
the
largest
and
most
influential
ethnic
groups
in
Cleveland
was the
Germans
,
who
began
settling
in the
area
in the
early
nineteenth
century
. The
first
Germans
in
Cleveland
were
chiefly
those of
German
descent
from
Pennsylvania
,
New
York
, and
Maryland
whose
ancestors
had
come
to the
United
States
before
the
Revolutionary
War
.
Germans
began
arriving
in
Cleveland
in
substantial
numbers
during
the
1830s
,
first
settling
along
Lorain
Street
in
Brooklyn
, and
along
Superior
and
Garden
(Central
Avenue)
streets
on the
east
side
.
Political
oppression
,
religious
persecution
, and
economic
depression
were
among
the
factors
encouraging
Germans
to
leave
their
homeland
.
After
a
lull
during
the
Civil
War
,
emigration
grew
substantially
until
1873
,
when
it
dropped
due
to the
United
States
'
1873
financial
panic
and an
industrial
boom
in
Germany
.
However
,
Germans
remained
the
largest
group
arriving
in the
city
until
the
mid-1890s
.
German
immigration
in
Cleveland
began
to
wane
at the
time
when
other
nationalities
were
immigrating
in
large
numbers
, and with the
exception
of those
escaping
economic
depression
in the
mid-1920s
and
Nazism
in the
1930s
,
relatively
few
Germans
immigrated
to
Cleveland
in the
twentieth
century
. The
Cleveland
Cultural
Gardens
,
located
along
East
Boulevard
and
Martin
Luther
King
Jr
.
Boulevard
, are
landscaped
gardens
with
statuary
honoring
Cleveland's
ethnic
groups
.
During
the
dedication
of the
Shakespeare
Garden
in
1916
,
it
was
decided
that
similar
sites
should be
prepared
for
each
of the
city's
ethnic
communities
. The
first
of these
gardens
, the
Hebrew
garden
, was
established
in
1926
. On
May
9
,
1927
the
city
set
aside
areas
of
Rockefeller
Park
for
future
gardens
. The
Italian
,
German
,
Lithuanian
,
Slovak
, and
Ukrainian
gardens
were
established
in
1930
; the
Polish
,
Hungarian
,
Czech
, and
Yugoslav
gardens
in
1934
; and the
American
,
Russian
,
Irish
,
Greek
, and
Syrian
gardens
in
1938
.
Romanian
,
Estonian
,
Afro-American
,
Chinese
,
Finnish
, and
Indian
gardens
have
since
been
created
.
Planning
and
fundraising
for
each
garden
was
undertaken
within
the
ethnic
communities
,
while
the
Cleveland
Cultural
Garden
Federation
(established
in
1925)
oversaw
planning
and
coordinated
various
joint
programs
.
