Golden

Schooner
in
Huron
River
Photograph
Subject
Transportation

Ships
Place
Huron (Ohio)
Erie County (Ohio)
Description
This
photograph
shows
the
Golden
Age
moored
on the
west
bank
of the
Huron
River
. At
287-feet
long
and a
carrying
capacity
of
3,199
gross
tons
, the
oak-hulled
schooner
was the
largest
ship
built
on the
Great
Lakes
when
she was
launched
in
1883
. The
photograph
measures
9.5
"
x
7
"
(24.13
x
17.8
cm)
.
When
the
Huron
River
rose
nine
feet
after
a
three-day
rain
, the
launch
of
Golden
Age
had to be
delayed
several
weeks
,
finally
taking
place
on
June
20
,
1883
.
Hundreds
of
spectators
lined
the
riverbanks
as
Captain
Charles
Hubbard
attempted
to
float
the
vessel
two
miles
to the
lake
. His
efforts
were
soon
thwarted
, as
trees
caught
at her
helm
.
However
,
several
farmers
came
to the
rescue
by
chopping
down
any
trees
in the
ship's
path
. At the
railroad
bridge
just
before
the
mouth
of the
river
, the
Golden
Age
became
stuck
again
and
delayed
the
mail
train
an
hour
.
Golden
Age's
first
voyage
was in
August
with a
cargo
of
100,000
bushels
of
grain
.
After
four
years
of
hauling
cargo
on the
Great
Lakes
, the
Golden
Age
generated
enough
money
to
pay
for
herself
.
