Connecticut
,
is
based
on the
original
survey
of the
Firelands
by
Almon
Ruggles
.
Doolittle
, an
engraver
,
made
several
prints
of the
battle
scenes
during
the
American
Revolution
. In the
1770s
, he
published
a
series
of
anti-British
political
cartoons
. He
later
engraved
a
number
of
early
maps
of
various
states
in the
new
Republic
, and was
responsible
for the
maps
appearing
in the
well-known
"
geographies
"
authored
by
Jedidiah
Morse
of
Philadelphia
.
Congress
designated
a
half-million
acres
of
land
south
of
Lake
Erie
as the "
Firelands
" in
1800
as
compensation
to the
1,800
residents
of
Connecticut
whose
homes
were
burned
by the
British
under
Governor
Tryon
in
1777
. The
Firelands
were
located
in the
western
portion
of the
Western
Reserve
and
include
present-day
Huron
and
Erie
counties
as
well
as
Danbury
Township
in
Ottawa
County
and
Ruggles
Township
in
Ashland
County
.
