Although
four-way
traffic
lights
were
less
expensive
than
modern
single-lane
lights
,
which
need
individual
poles
and
control
boxes
, they were not as
efficient
.
Garrett
Morgan
(1877-1963)
moved
from
Kentucky
to
Cleveland
,
Ohio
in
1895
,
where
he
went
to
work
as a
sewing
machine
repairman
. In
1923
,
Morgan
patented
the
first
practical
traffic
light
.
