Francis

Sales
Brunner
(1795-1859)
was the
leading
missionary
priest
of the
Society
of the
Precious
Blood
in
Ohio
. He was
born
in
Switzerland
to
Maria
Anna
and
John
Baptist
Brunner
.
Maria
Anna
Brunner
was the
foundress
of the
Sisters
of the
Precious
Blood
in
Switzerland
. In the
History
of the
Diocese
of
Toledo
,
Volume
IV
,
Monsignor
Lawrence
A.
Mossing
wrote
that
Father
Brunner
, "was by
far
the
greatest
missionary
that
labored
in
northern
Ohio
. His
labors
are
beyond
imagination.
" The
Society
of the
Precious
Blood
, a
Catholic
congregation
established
in
Italy
in
1815
by
St
.
Gaspar
del
Bufalo
,
began
its
American
ministry
in
Peru
,
Ohio
in
Huron
County
in
January
1844
. In
July
of the
same
year
the
Sisters
of the
Precious
Blood
,
established
in
1834
, also
came
to
Ohio
. The
priests
,
brothers
, and
sisters
, also
known
as "
Sanguinists
"
began
their
ministry
of
prayer
,
spiritual
support
, and
education
to
German
immigrants
in
northern
Ohio
.
Between
1844
and
1856
,
nine
major
foundations
or
missions
were
established
in
Seneca
,
Mercer
,
Putnam
, and
Auglaize
counties
.
