Rickenbacker
, a
native
of
Columbus
,
Ohio
.
Spiraling
up
the
surface
of the
stick
is
a
snake
marked
down
the
back
with
black
German
Crosses
. There are
26
crosses
,
each
one
representing
an
aerial
victories
over
Rickenbacker's
German
opponents
. The
stick
is
3
feet
(91.44
cm)
long
and
2
inches
(5.08
cm)
in
diameter
.
Swagger
sticks
evolved
from
officers
'
pace
canes
,
which
were
used
to
keep
rhythm
during
marches
. The
swagger
stick
became
the
sign
of a
gentleman
warrior
during
the
first
World
War
and was a
symbol
of
elegance
and
integrity
.
Rickenbacker
(1890-1973)
first
gained
notoriety
as a
racecar
driver
. His
fame
and
skill
drew
the
attention
of
General
Pershing
, the
commander
of the
Army
Expeditionary
Forces
in
France
,
who
assigned
Rickenbacker
to be his
chauffeur
.
Rickenbacker
gained
permission
to
undergo
flight
training
and
upon
completion
was
transferred
to the
94th
Aero
Squadron
. He was the
unmatched
"
Ace
of
Aces
" and he
soon
lead
the
American
forces
with
26
confirmed
victories
over
the
German
aircraft
. As a
result
of his
successes
he was also
given
command
of the
94th
Aero
Squadron
. He was
awarded
the
Medal
of
Honor
for his
heroic
actions
on
September
25
,
1918
,
when
he
attacked
a
German
force
of
seven
aircraft
and
managed
to
shoot
down
two
.
Following
the
war
Rickenbacker
was
hailed
as a
national
hero
.
Between
the
wars
,
Rickenbacker's
love
of
auto
racing
lead
him to
purchase
the
Indianapolis
Speedway
. His
interest
in
aviation
,
business
skill
, and
fame
moved
him into the
position
of
president
of
Eastern
Airlines
. He
once
again
served
the
United
States
after
the
outbreak
of
World
War
II
. In
October
of
1942
, he was on
board
a
B-17
bomber
that
crashed
in the
Pacific
Ocean
while
on a
secret
mission
to
New
Guinea
. He
survived
24
days
on the
sea
in a
life
raft
before
he was
rescued
.
