Description
This
Nancy
Ford
Cones
photograph
, "The
Dryads
" was
taken
circa
1933
. The
models
are her
daughter
Margaret
,
Virginia
Long
, and
Marjorie
Smith
. This
silver
print
photograph
measures
6.875
"
x
10.625
"
(17.46
x
26.98
cm)
. This
beech
tree
stood
on the
Cones
'
Loveland
property
and was
often
the
setting
for
Cones
'
dryad
(woodland
nymph)
photographs
. They were
never
seen
by
Loveland
residents
,
who
would
likely
have
considered
them
indecent
.
Nancy
Ford
Cones
(1869-1962)
was
born
in
Milan
,
Ohio
. She
began
studying
photography
in her
twenties
;
married
a
fellow
photographer
,
James
Cones
, and in
1907
the
couple
moved
to a
33-acre
farm
outside
Loveland
. From then
until
his
death
in
1939
,
James
printed
all
his
wife's
negatives
,
making
the
two
possibly
the
first
husband
and
wife
team
in the
history
of
American
photography
.
Nancy
Ford
Cones
won
second
prize
in a
photographic
competition
sponsored
in
1905
by
Eastman
Kodak
Company
.
First
and
third
prizes
among
the
28,000
entries
went
to
distinguished
photographers
Edward
Steichen
and
Alfred
Stieglitz
,
respectively
.
Much
of
Cones
'
work
reflected
her
farm
,
Road's
End
.
Most
of her
models
were
relatives
and
local
residents
; she
even
made
some
of the
costumes
for her
models
to
portray
a
particular
character
from a
story
or
fairy
tale
.
Camera
manufacturers
such
as
Eastman
Kodak
and
Bausch
&
Lomb
bought
her
rural
scenes
for
advertising
campaigns
, and
many
of her
works
appeared
on the
covers
of
such
magazines
as
Country
Life
in
America
and
Women's
Home
Companion
. By
1920
, these
titles
had
expanded
to
include
the
most
prominent
national
magazines
as
McClure's
,
Cosmopolitan
,
Ladies
'
Home
Journal
, and
Munsey's
Magazine
.
