Youngstown
State
University's
first
head
football
coach
,
Dwight
"
Dike
"
Beede
.
Beede
counted
147
career
wins
. His
career
is
distinguished
by
having
he
longest
tenure
of any
coach
serving
on the
same
team
in
consecutive
seasons
in
NCAA
history
.
Beede
also
invented
the
penalty
flag
now
used
in
all
football
competitions
.
Dwight
"
Dike
"
Beede
(1903-1972)
was
born
in
Youngstown
. He
attended
South
High
School
in
Youngstown
,
where
he was a
class
president
and
played
football
. He
received
a
scholarship
to
Newberry
College
in
South
Carolina
and
later
transferred
to
Carnegie
Tech
University
(Carnegie-Mellon
Institute)
in
Pittsburgh
,
where
he
studied
structural
engineering
,
joined
the
scholastic
honorary
society
, and
made
football
history
. He
gained
his
initial
success
as a
college
football
star
with
Judge
Wally
Steffan's
Carnegie
squad
in the
1920s
and
is
credited
with
introducing
the
famous
"
spinner
play.
" He was
captain
of the
football
team
and also
played
basketball
.
Although
offered
a
position
to
teach
mathematics
at
Carnegie
Tech
, he
went
to
Westminster
College
in
1926
as a
coach
. He
held
the
position
for
five
years
,
coaching
a
celebrated
team
that
tied
Duquesne
University
for the
tri-state
championship
. He then
coached
at
Geneva
College
from
1934
to
1936
and in
1938
came
to
Youngstown
University
. He
retired
from
Youngstown
State
University
on
November
18
,
1972
to his
farm
in
Elkton
(Columbiana
County)
,
Ohio
and
died
soon
after
.
Beede
created
the
first
penalty
flag
on
October
17
,
1941
. The
flag
was
first
used
in a
game
against
Oklahoma
City
University
at the
Youngstown's
Rayen
Stadium
.
Before
the
introduction
of the
penalty
flag
, the
officials
used
horns
and
whistles
to
signal
a
penalty
. This
made
it
difficult
for
fans
and the
media
to
know
that there was an
infraction
on the
field
because
they
could
not
hear
the
signal
. His
wife
,
Irma
Beede
,
later
became
known
as the "
Betsy
Ross
of
Football
"
because
she
sewed
the
first
flag
.
Beede
asked
her to
make
a
flag
that had a
bright
color
(red)
with
white
stripes
. She
used
some
lead
sinkers
from
Beede's
fishing
tackle
box
to
weigh
it
down
.
It
was
16
"
square
with
weight
all
at
one
end
of the
flag
. The
flag
has been
modified
over
the
years
and
today
it
is
yellow
cloth
that has
sand
in
it
to
weigh
it
down
.
Oklahoma
City
Coach
Os
Doenges
and the
four
game
officials
,
Hugh
McFee
,
Jack
McFee
,
Bill
Renner
, and
Carl
Rebele
,
agreed
to
use
the
flags
as an
experiment
.
Jack
McFee
later
used
the
flag
at the
Ohio
State-Iowa
game
, at
which
the
league's
commissioner
,
Major
John
Griffith
, was a
spectator
. He
became
very
curious
why
the
officials
were
throwing
"
rags
" in the
air
when
a
penalty
was
called
.
Griffith
was
impressed
with the
idea
after
McFee
explained
what was
going
on
after
the
game
.
