Description
This
photograph
shows
aviator
Al
Engel
and his
airplane
, the
Bumble
Bee
.
Engel
often
gave
out
photographs
for
promotional
purposes
. The
photograph
measures
9.25
"
x
6
"
(23.5
x
15.24
cm)
.
Engel
(1879-1979)
, a
native
Clevelander
,
crashed
his
first
airplane
, a
Model
D
Curtiss
, in the
fall
of
1911
.
While
making
an
exhibition
flight
in
one
of
Cleveland's
eastern
suburbs
,
Engel
experienced
engine
failure
and
reportedly
was
unable
to
avoid
hitting
a
cow
that
wandered
into his
landing
path
.
Neither
Engel
nor
the
cow
was
seriously
injured
, but the
aircraft
was not
repairable
. In the
spring
of
1912
Engel
returned
to
Cleveland
with a
new
aircraft
equipped
with
floats
,
enabling
him to
take
off
from and
land
on any
suitable
body
of
water
.
Originally
equipped
as a
single-seater
powered
by a
50-horsepower
Curtiss
engine
, by
1913
Engel
had
increased
the
payload
capacity
of the
aircraft
by
incorporating
a
passenger
seat
and
upper
wingtip
extensions
. A
specially-built
Curtiss
engine
provided
more
power
,
necessary
due
to the
modifications
.
Engel
flew
the
Bumble
Bee
, as
it
became
known
,
extensively
throughout
northeastern
Ohio
. For a
time
he
based
the
airplane
at the
Lakewood
Yacht
Club
(now
Cuyahoga
Yacht
Club)
at the
mouth
of the
Rocky
River
. On
occasion
, the
Bumble
Bee
was
crated
and
shipped
to
other
locations
for
exhibition
and
passenger
flights
,
such
as
Akron
and
Ashtabula
,
Ohio
.
Engel
also
participated
in
aerial
meets
at
Chicago
and
Buffalo
. He
retired
the
plane
at the
end
of the
1914
season
, and in
1946
sold
it
to the
Thompson
Products
Museum
in
Cleveland
.
It
was
restored
at that
time
, and
is
now
the
sole
remaining
genuine
Curtiss
"
hydro.
"
Date of Original
