Columbus
Zoo
participating
in the
Recycling
for
Rhinos
program
. The
program
raised
money
for the
Ngare
Sergoi
Rhino
Sanctuary
,
now
the
Lewa
Wildlife
Conservancy
, the
first
sanctuary
created
for the
conservation
of
rhinos
in
Kenya
. In
November
1926
,
Columbus
City
Council
President
Scott
Wehr
adopted
a
resolution
requesting
the
state
of
Ohio
to
develop
a
21-acre
game
refuge
on
lands
east
of the
Scioto
River
in
southern
Delaware
County
,
which
would be
called
Riverside
Park
. The
motion
was
approved
and the
first
animals
,
reindeer
provided
by the
Columbus
Dispatch
,
went
on
display
at the
park
on
October
4
,
1927
. The
Dispatch
continued
to
donate
animal
to
Riverside
Park
,
including
lions
,
tigers
, and
monkeys
. In
1937
, the
city
of
Columbus
formally
named
Riverside
Park
the
Columbus
Zoo
. A
membership
drive
was
held
the
same
year
,
resulting
in a
membership
increase
to
12,000
by
1940
. The
zoo
continued
to
develop
over
the
next
few
decades
,
adding
new
animals
including
gorillas
. In
1956
,
Colo
became
the
first
gorilla
to be
born
in
captivity
. By
1972
, the
Columbus
Zoo
housed
3,215
specimens
,
which
rivaled
the
population
of any
major
metropolitan
zoo
. In
1978
,
Jack
Hanna
was
named
executive
director
of the
zoo
and
worked
to
place
animals
in
more
natural
habitats
,
instead
of the
cage-like
structures
frequently
seen
at
other
zoos
. By
2003
the
Columbus
Zoo
was
home
to
700
species
of
animals
and
11,000
individual
specimens
. The
zoo
is
recognized
for its
success
in
captive
breeding
,
especially
of
lowland
gorillas
.
