Hiram
College
served
as the
summer
home
of the
Cleveland
Browns
from
1952
to
1974
. For
twenty-three
seasons
, from
mid
July
to
early
September
, the
summer
peace
of
Hiram
village
was
enlivened
with the
excitement
of
northeastern
Ohio's
professional
football
team
living
and
practicing
on the
Hiram
campus
.
Visitors
drove
from
all
over
Ohio
to
attend
the
free
practice
sessions
and
get
treasured
Browns
players
'
autographs
.
It
remains
the
longest
stint
for the
Browns
at any
training
camp
in their
50-year
existence
.
While
training
at
Hiram
, the
Browns
won
three
NFL
titles
.
Paul
Brown
(1908-1991)
was
born
in
Norwalk
,
Ohio
. His
Ohio
State
University
team
won
the
national
title
in
1942
. As
head
coach
of the
Cleveland
Browns
, he
led
the
team
to
four
straight
AAFC
titles
(1946-1949)
and
3
NFL
titles
(1950
,
1954
,
1955)
. In
1968
, he
formed
the
Cincinnati
Bengals
as
head
coach
and
part-owner
. The
team
went
to the
playoffs
in
1970
.
Lou
Groza
(1924-2000)
was
born
in
Martin's
Ferry
,
Ohio
and
attended
The
Ohio
State
University
.
During
his
21-year
career
with the
Cleveland
Browns
he
scored
1,608
points
, a
team
record
.
Groza
was an
All-NFL
tackle
six
years
and
played
in
nine
Pro
Bowls
. In
1954
he was
named
NFL
Player
of
Year
and he was
inducted
in to the
Pro-Football
Hall
of
Fame
in
1974
. His
number
76
jersey
was
retired
by the
Browns
.
