Description |
William Sommer (1867-1949) created this mural, titled The City in 1833, for the Cleveland Public Library as part of the Public Works of Art Project during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The painting is an oil on canvas and measures 288" x 240" (731.52 x 609.6 cm). The painting was hung in Brett Hall at the Cleveland Public Library. As a tax-supported institution, the Cleveland Public Library was eligible to commission and receive art works from the first New Deal art program, the Public Works of Art Project, which operated from December 1933 to June 1934 under the auspices of the United States Treasury Department. The purpose of the program, inspired in part by the Mexican government's subsidized mural movement of the 1920s, was to provide work relief for unemployed artists during the Great Depression and create works of "American Scene" public art for government and public buildings. Cleveland Public Library Director Linda Eastman was the sister of Cleveland artist and art educator William Joseph Eastman, a member of the Cleveland art project advisory committee. She believed that art offered solace to library users in a troubled time. Murals were installed in the main library and 34 neighborhood branch libraries. |
