.
It

Letty
Felix
Jones
and
Julia
McCume
Flory
posing
in
front
of a
window
with a
magazine
. The
two
women
were
residents
of
Newark
.
White
frequently
used
his
neighbors
as
models
. To
achieve
the
effect
he
wanted
, he would
select
their
clothing
and
ask
them to
rise
before
dawn
to
photograph
them with the
best
light
.
White
(1871-1925)
was
born
in
West
Carlisle
,
Ohio
and
graduated
from
Newark
High
School
. He
worked
as a
bookkeeper
, but
soon
became
interested
in
photography
.
Due
to the
high
cost
of
photographic
supplies
,
White
composed
each
photograph
carefully
. He
became
a
leader
of
pictorialists
,
photographers
who
experimented
with
unusual
styles
,
light
, and
composition
. By
1898
White
was
invited
to
exhibit
his
work
at the
Philadelphia
Salon
,
where
he
received
much
acclaim
. The
same
year
, he
organized
the
Newark
Camera
Club
,
which
soon
became
an
influential
force
in
photography
. The
club
held
annual
exhibits
in
Newark
,
which
drew
photographers
from
all
over
the
world
. In
1906
,
White
moved
to
New
York
and
began
teaching
at the
Teachers
College
at
Columbia
University
. He also
taught
summer
classes
in
Maine
, the
success
of
which
encouraged
him to
open
his
own
school
, the
Clarence
H
.
White
School
of
Photography
, in
1914
.
White
died
in
1925
, but his
widow
Jane
kept
the
school
going
until
1943
.
Lecturers
at the
school
included
Ansel
Adams
and
Beaumont
Newhall
.
