manufactured
pianos
and
organs
through
the
1930s
.
Captain
Alvin
B
.
Chase
, a
Civil
War
veteran
,
organized
the
A.B
.
Chase
Piano
Factory
in
1875
with a
capital
stock
of
$50,000
. The
factory
was
located
in the
old
Norwalk
Barrel
Co
.
buildings
on
Newton
Street
.
L.L
.
Doug
was
secretary-treasurer
of the
company
and
H.R
.
Moore
was the
general
superintendent
. The
firm
began
production
of
reed
organs
in
1876
.
Mr
.
Chase
died
shortly
afterwards
and
is
buried
in
Woodlawn
Cemetery
.
After
the
death
of
Mr
.
Case
,
Calvin
Whitney
, an
original
stockholder
,
became
president
of the
firm
in
1877
and was
associated
with
it
until
his
death
in
1909
. In
1885
, the
company
began
producing
pianos
,
first
the
square
style
, then
upright
,
grand
, and
player
models
. By
1892
, the
company
employed
225
men
and
sold
23
piano
styles
and
70
organ
styles
. The
firm
won
the
grand
prize
for the
quality
,
scale
,
action
,
tone
,
materials
, and
pedal
system
of their
products
at the
1893
World's
Fair
.
About
1900
,
A.B
.
Chase
discontinued
manufacturing
organs
to
concentrate
on
pianos
. A
white
A.B
.
Chase
piano
graced
the
parlor
of the
White
House
while
President
McKinley
was in
office
.
Pianos
from
Norwalk
were
sold
worldwide
and by
1904
the
company
stock
had
risen
to
$300,000
. The
pianos
were then
marketed
under
the
name
"
New
York
-
Norwalk
"
until
about
1930
,
when
that
company
went
out
of
business
. This
image
was
published
in
Picturesque

published
by

Printing
Company
in
Norwalk
,

, in

.
It
is
