This
Medal
of
Honor
, the
highest
military
decoration
in the
United
States
, was
awarded
to
Lieutenant
Colonel
Addison
E
.
Baker
of
Akron
,
Ohio
, a
World
War
II
pilot
. The
award
is
presented
to the
select
few
who
distinguish
themselves
through
gallantry
and
intrepidity
at the
risk
of
life
,
above
and
beyond
the
call
of
duty
. The
medal
measures
approximately
1.5
" by
2.5
"
(3.81
by
6.3
cm)
.
Baker
(1907-1943)
served
with the
Ohio
National
Guard
before
being
called
to
active
duty
by the
U
.
S
.
Army
Air
Corps
in
1940
to
serve
in
World
War
II
. He was
promoted
to
major
in
1942
and
given
command
of the
328th
bomb
squadron
. In
1943
he was
again
promoted
and
assumed
command
of the
93rd
bombardment
group
. On
August
1
,
1943
Baker
led
his
command
on a
low-level
bombing
attack
against
oil
refineries
in
Ploesti
,
Romania
that
provided
a
large
proportion
of
Germany's
oil
and
aviation
gasoline
. As they
approached
the
refineries
, his
B-24
Liberator
was
hit
by
flak
,
causing
severe
damage
and
setting
the
aircraft
ablaze
.
Instead
of
landing
or
parachuting
from the
plane
,
Baker
continued
leading
his
group
to the
target
,
where
he
drooped
his
bombs
to
devastating
effect
.
Moments
later
,
unable
to
gain
sufficient
altitude
, his
aircraft
crashed
in
flames
.
Four
other
men
who
participated
in the
Ploesti
bombing
mission
also
received
the
Medal
of
Honor
,
two
of them
posthumously
.
