Tecumseh
Sherman
. As a
young
boy
, he
worked
on the
canals
and
studied
law
. He was
admitted
to the
bar
in
1844
and
worked
as a
lawyer
in
both
Mansfield
and
Cleveland
. He was
elected
to the
U.S
.
Congress
in
1853
and
continued
to
serve
until
1861
,
when
he was
elected
to the
U.S
.
Senate
,
where
he
served
for
over
thirty
years
.
Sherman
was also
chairman
of the
Agriculture
,
Finance
,
Library
, and
Foreign
Relations
Committee
;
president
pro-tempore
of the
Senate
, and
Republican
conference
chairman
. He also
served
as
secretary
of the
treasury
under
President
Hayes
and
secretary
of
state
under
President
McKinley
.
Senator
Sherman
was a
Republican
nominee
for
president
in
1880
, but
lost
the
nomination
to
James
Garfield
, the
man
who
had
made
his
nomination
speech
. He
is
best
known
for the
Sherman
Anti-Trust
Act
,
which
was
meant
to
break
up
the
powerful
business
monopolies
and
is
still
an
important
piece
of
legislation
. This
photograph
is
part
of a
larger
collection
of
photographs
taken
by
Richland
County
photographer
Artemus
Whissemore
.
During
the
1876
centennial
celebration
,
Whissemore
offered
to
take
a
free
photograph
of any
person
over
the
age
of
sixty
who
had been a
resident
of the
county
for at
least
fifty
years
.
Whissemore
was
born
in
Wayne
County
,
Ohio
, and had been
practicing
photography
in
Mansfield
for
nearly
twenty
years
when
the
photographs
were
taken
. An
entry
in the
History
and
Biography
of
Richland
County
(1880)
proclaimed
that: "his
reputation
as an
artist
is
so
extensively
known
that
it
needs
but
little
comment.
"
Although
the
collection
originally
consisted
of
1,194
items
,
only
892
remained
when
the
collection
was
transferred
to
OGS
in the
1950s
,
one
quarter
of
which
are
unidentified
.
