Denmark
,
Ohio
. He
attended
Miami
University
and
joined
the "
Home
Guard
" at the
outbreak
of the
Civil
War
.
Brice
served
as a
three-months
volunteer
in the
86th
Ohio
Volunteer
Infantry
(O.V.I.)
,
which
was
stationed
in
West
Virginia
.
After
graduating
in
1863
, he
raised
his
own
company
and
re-entered
the
war
as a
captain
.
Brice
rose
to the
rank
of
lieutenant
colonel
by the
end
of the
war
.
After
studying
law
at the
University
of
Michigan
at
Ann
Arbor
, he
commenced
practice
in
Lima
.
Brice
was
chairman
of the
Democratic
National
Committee
in
1889
. He
served
in the
U
.
S
.
Senate
from
1891-1897
and
acted
as
chairman
of the
Committee
on
Pacific
Railroads
. The
artist
, also
called
Silas
Jerome
Uhl
, was
born
in
Millersburg
in
1841
. He
settled
in
Springfield
,
where
he
worked
as a
portrait
painter
and
teacher
.
After
studying
in
Paris
,
Uhl
returned
to
Springfield
,
where
he
maintained
a
home
although
he
worked
for
extended
periods
in
other
parts
of the
state
and in
Washington
D
.
C
. and
New
York
.
Uhl
painted
many
statesmen
during
his
career
.
