Bonnell
Mansion
, the
former
home
of a
prominent
Youngstown
family
,
located
at
315
Wick
Avenue
in
Youngstown
,
Ohio
. The
mansion
was the
first
home
of the
Youngstown
Institute
of
Technology
(now
Youngstown
State
University)
. The
School
of
Law
of the
Youngstown
Association
School
, an
evening
school
sponsored
by the
Young
Men's
Christian
Association
(YMCA)
, was
established
in
1908
. In
1920
, the
school
granted
its
first
bachelor
of
laws
degree
and
started
a
four-year
course
in
business
administration
. In
1921
, the
school
changed
its
name
to the
Youngstown
Institute
of
Technology
, and
evening
liberal
arts
courses
were
offered
for the
first
time
. As a
temporary
solution
to
overcrowding
at its
main
building
, the
YMCA
leased
the
former
home
of the
John
Meek
Bonnell
in
1922
.
Laboratories
for the
engineering
school
were
placed
in the
executive
offices
, the
library
, and
several
classrooms
. The
second
floor
was
used
for
classrooms
. The
third
floor
was
converted
into
drafting
rooms
for the
engineering
school
. By
1925
,
increasing
enrollment
led
the
school
to
purchase
the
John
C
.
Wick
Mansion
at the
corner
of
Wick
and
Lincoln
avenues
. The
school
moved
out
of the
Bonnell
Mansion
and into the
Wick
Mansion
the
following
year
.
Youngstown
Institute
of
Technology
became
Youngstown
State
University
in
1967
. The
Bonnells
were
prominent
industrialists
in the
Mahoning
Valley
.
William
Bonnell
,
who
was
born
in
Yorkshire
,
England
in
1810
, was
one
of the
stockholders
of the
Youngstown
Iron
Company
,
which
opened
in
1846
as the
first
finishing
mill
in the
Mahoning
Valley
. In
1854
, the
plant
became
property
of
William
Bonnell
and
Joseph
,
Richard
, and
Thomas
Brown
,
ironworkers
from
New
Castle
,
Pennsylvania
,
who
reorganized
the
company
and
renamed
it
Brown
,
Bonnell
&
Company
. In
1879
the
plant
changed
ownership
but
retained
the
name
. The
mill
operated
as the
Brown-Bonnell
works
until
it
was
sold
in
1899
to the
Republic
Iron
&
Steel
Company
.
John
Meek
Bonnell
(1848-c
.
1884)
, a
nephew
of
William
Bonnell
, was
born
in
Yorkshire
,
England
and
came
to
America
in
1865
. He
joined
his
uncle
working
as a
shipping
clerk
in
Brown-Bonnell
mill
. He
later
became
traveling
representative
for
Cleveland
,
Brown
&
Company
at
Cleveland
, and in
1875
became
a
member
of the
firm
Bonnell
,
Botsford
&
Company
. In
1875
he
married
Emily
Wick
and had
three
children
,
Joseph
Fearnley
(b
.
1876)
,
Hugh
Wick
, and
Caroline
.
When
John
returned
to
Youngstown
in
1883
he
became
associated
with the
Mahoning
Valley
Iron
Company
, but
died
about
a
year
later
.
Joseph
, a
Yale
graduate
, had a
long
career
in the
Mahoning
Valley
steel
industry
. He
served
as
director
of the
Ohio
Iron
and
Steel
Company
, the
Northeast
Ohio
Real
Estate
Company
, and the
First
National
Bank
and the
Dollar
Savings
and
Loan
Company
, and as
vice
president
and
treasurer
of the
H
.
B
.
Wick
Land
Company
.
