Three
individuals
in the
photo
were
charter
members
of the
Youngstown
Library
Association
.
Sarah
Pearson
became
the
first
librarian
in
1872
, and
held
the
keys
to the
bookcases
containing
the
168
books
that were the
core
of the
library
collection
. She
served
as
librarian
from
1872
until
1881
and
opened
the
collection
to the
public
on
Saturday
evenings
. She
earned
fifty
dollars
a
year
in this
position
.
Later
, she was the
first
secretary-treasurer
of the
association
and
served
on the
board
of
trustees
until
1886
.
Reuben
McMillan
, for
whom
the
library
was
named
, was
apprenticed
to a
saddle
maker
as a
boy
, but
independently
pursued
his
education
through
books
. He
began
teaching
at the
age
of
twenty
and
organized
and
taught
in
schools
in
Columbiana
and
Mahoning
counties
. He
served
as
president
of
Ohio
State
Teachers
Association
and
led
the
effort
to
create
a
free
public
library
in
Youngstown
.
Julia
A.
Hitchcock
was
bound
out
to
families
during
her
youth
, and
after
a
particularly
unhappy
situation
was
sent
to
live
with a
family
who
valued
books
and
education
. She
trained
as a
teacher
and
worked
in the
Wood
Street
School
for
many
years
. A
charter
member
of the
Youngstown
Library
Association
, she
served
as
librarian
from
1890
to
1898
.
