Description
This
sewing
machine
was
used
to
sew
the
wing
fabric
on the
world's
first
successful
heavier-than-air
flying
machine
, the
1903
Wright
Flyer
.
It
was also
used
to
sew
the
fabric
coverings
of
other
Wright
aircraft
, from their
earliest
gliders
to the
1905
Wright
Flyer
III
that
Orville
called
"the
first
practical
airplane.
" In a
letter
dated
August
20
,
1902
, to
Bishop
Milton
Wright
,
Wilbur
and
Orville's
sister
wrote
, "Will
spins
the
sewing
machine
around
by the
hour
while
Orv
squats
around
marking
the
places
to
sew.
" This
family
sewing
machine
,
purchased
after
their
mother's
death
in
1889
, was
used
by
both
brothers
, an
example
not
just
of their
manual
dexterity
but of their
unique
partnership
.
Theirs
was a
close
,
unique
partnership
between
brothers
four
years
apart
,
broken
only
by
Wilbur's
premature
death
in
1912
. The
sewing
machine
was
donated
by the
estate
of
Orville
Wright
on
February
17
,
1949
and
is
in the
permanent
collection
of
Carillon
Historical
Park
. This
Model
No
.
15
,
Singer
sewing
machine
was
manufactured
on
October
18
,
1898
in
either
Kilbowie
or
Montreal
,
Canada
.
It
is
a
foot-operated
treadle
sewing
machine
;
painted
black
with
applied
decoration
on the
body
and the
bottom
plate
. The
machine
stores
in a
table
,
which
can
be
opened
to
provide
a
larger
work
surface
.
It
has
oak
veneered
work
surfaces
with
poplar
secondary
wood
,
two
pull
out
drawers
on
either
side
, and a
black
painted
iron
stand
.
