Description
This
walking
spinning
wheel
was
used
by the
Nutt
family
of
Centerville
,
Ohio
. "
Walking
"
spinning
wheels
were
used
to
spin
wool
rather
than
flax
and were
named
because
women
who
used
the
machine
had to
walk
back
and
forth
to
load
the
wool
.
It
measures
approximately
4
'
x
4
'
(121.92
x
121.92
cm)
.
Aaron
and
Mary
Nutt
immigrated
to
Centerville
in
1796
.
Born
in
New
Jersey
in
1758
,
Nutt
moved
his
family
to
Kentucky
. There, he and
two
brothers-in-law
,
Benjamin
Archer
and
Benjamin
Robbins
, were
hired
in
1796
by
Judge
John
Cleve
Symmes
to
survey
land
north
of the
Ohio
River
and
between
the
Great
and
Little
Miami
Rivers
. They were
paid
in
land
.
However
,
Symmes
had
only
informally
contracted
to
purchase
the
land
from the
federal
government
and
began
selling
it
before
it
was
paid
for.
Symmes
'
funds
could
not
cover
the
cost
of the
entire
purchase
, and
land
sales
north
of
Lebanon
,
Ohio
were
declared
invalid
.
Nutt
and
others
were
forced
to
repurchase
their
land
from the
federal
government
.
Some
settlers
could
not
meet
the
additional
financial
burden
and
departed
, but
Nutt
was
able
to
pay
the
taxes
and
finally
repurchase
his
acreage
.
Nutt
served
in
several
positions
as a
Washington
township
official
. He
died
in
1842
at the
age
of
83
and
is
buried
in the
Old
Centerville
cemetery
.
