lithograph
,
which
bears
the
caption
"
West
Front
of the
Ursuline
Academy
near
Fayetteville
,
Brown
County
,
Ohio
"
shows
the
St
.
Ursula
Literary
Institute
and its
surrounding
property
in
1847
. The
main
building
,
which
was
completed
that
same
year
and
served
as the
convent
and
school
,
is
on the
left
. The
other
buildings
were on the
site
when
the
Sisters
arrived
in
1845
. They are the
professor's
house
, the
workmen's
house
, and the
seminary
. On the
far
right
is
St
.
Martin's
Church
to
which
the
Sisters
added
choir
space
. The
lithograph
measures
24
by
15
inches
(60.96
by
38.1
cm)
. In
1845
, a
group
of
eleven
Ursuline
Sisters
from
northern
France
came
to
Ohio
at the
urging
of
Cincinnati
Bishop
John
Baptist
Purcell
.
Relying
largely
on
donations
from
France
, the
Ursulines
constructed
a
100
by
120
foot
building
that
stood
four
stories
high
.
It
was
completed
in
1847
. The
building
served
as a
convent
and an
academy
for
young
ladies
of
well-to-do
families
. The
Ursulines
had a
reputation
as
excellent
educators
and
girls
came
from
all
over
the
United
States
to
attend
the
academy
. The
building
was in
use
as a
school
until
1981
.
It
was
later
demolished
.
