.
Begun
in
1985
,
it
was
finished
on
March
20
,
1989
and
measures
82.5
"
x
98.5
"
(2.09
x
2.50
m)
. The
green
in the
quilt
represents
the
wilderness
and the
large
central
cross
represents
the
Cross
in the
Wilderness
. The
plain
green
blocks
are
quilted
in the
Passion
Flower
design
adapted
from the
wood
carvings
that were
done
by the
sisters
. There are
thirteen
pictorial
blocks
that
represents
various
aspects
of the
life
of the
Sisters
and the
institution
. The
second
pictorial
block
shows
the
sisters
who
came
to
inspect
the
old
log
church
before
moving
in. The
fifth
pictorial
block
shows
the
Tabernacle
Door
, The
New
Jerusalem
. The
eighth
block
shows
a
sister
teaching
,
which
was the
mission
of the
Ursulines
. The
twelfth
block
shows
sisters
ice
skating
.

measures

Agnes
Quallen
lived
in
St
.
Martin
,
Ohio
,
near
the
Ursulines
, for
most
of her
life
and
worked
for them in
many
capacities
. She
worked
with the
sisters
as a
secretary
first
in the
high
school
and then in
Chatfield
College
. A
group
of
eleven
sisters
led
by
Julia
Chatfield
settled
in
Brown
County
in
1845
.
Originally
from an
Ursuline
Convent
in
northern
France
, the
nuns
came
to
Ohio
at the
request
of
Bishop
John
Baptist
Purcell
. The
sisters
chartered
their
school
in
1846
as the
St
.
Ursula
Literary
Institute
. The
Ursulines
had a
reputation
as
excellent
educators
and
girls
came
from
all
over
the
United
States
to
attend
the
academy
.
Subjects
taught
at the
school
included
English
,
French
,
music
,
fine
arts
,
modern
languages
,
physics
, and
natural
history
.
