bamboo
from a
farmer
near
Kyoto
,
Japan
and
used
finely-shaved
and
carbonized
bamboo
filaments
in his
lamps
from
1880
until
the
early
1890s
.
Edison
and his
staff
tested
thousands
of
materials
for
use
as
filaments
before
discovering
that
carbonized
cotton
thread
would
burn
for an
adequately
long
period
of
time
. The
Edison
Electric
Lamp
revolutionized
lighting
throughout
the
world
. The
electric
lamp
was
much
cleaner
and
safer
than
candles
or
gaslight
. In the
1890s
,
however
,
Edison
became
embroiled
in a
battle
of
AC
or
DC
current
,
which
he
eventually
lost
to
industrialist
George
Westinghouse
,
who
pioneered
the
more
versatile
alternating-current
(AC)
.
Edison
was
born
in
Milan
,
Ohio
. He
gained
fame
as an
inventor
,
registering
a
total
of
1,093
patents
for
such
innovations
as the
incandescent
light
bulb
, the
phonograph
, and the
moving
picture
camera
.
