marks
the
birth

baptism
of
Magdalena
Strack
(or
Strock)
,
daughter
of
Joseph
and
Elisabeth
Miller
Strack
in
March
1819
.
Frakturs
are
hand-written
or
printed
manuscripts
that are
decorated
with
pen-and-ink
and
watercolors
. They were
made
primarily
for
German-American
families
in the
late
eighteenth
and
nineteenth
centuries
. The
word
fraktur
comes
from the
Latin
word
meaning
"
broken
" and
refers
to the
angular
shape
of
decorative
German
lettering
. This
Fraktur
is
hand-lettered
and
bears
a
hand-drawn
border
of
red
and
black
diamonds
. At the
bottom
are
traditional
tulips
,
vines
and
other
flowers
. The
translation
of this
document
is
"To these
two
married
people
,
Joseph
Strack
and his
wife
Elisabeth
nee
Miller
, was
born
a
daughter
on
March
14
of the
year
of the
Lord
1819
. This
Magdelena
was
born
in
Youngstown
Township
,
Trumbull
County
in the
State
of
Ohio
in
North
America
and has been
baptized
and
received
the
name
Magdelena
-
in the
year
of
our
Lord
1819
by
Mr
.
Peter
Mannenschmidt.
"
Witnesses
to the
baptism
were
Henrich
Brunstetter
and his
wife
Magdelena
.
Joseph
Strack
,
father
of the
above
mentioned
Joseph
Strack
and
grandfather
of
Magdelena
in this
fraktur
,
emigrated
from
Wurtemburg
,
Germany
around
1767
. He
served
as a
soldier
in the
Revolutionary
War
and
moved
to the
Austintown
,
Ohio
area
around
1812
. With him
came
his
wife
,
five
of their
seven
sons
,
four
daughters
, and their
grandchildren
.
Two
other
sons
followed
later
, and
members
of the
family
settled
in
Austintown
,
Newton
Falls
,
Southington
Township
, and
Canfield
Township
.
Joseph
Strock
died
in
1832
at the
age
of
84
and
is
buried
in
Canfield
. The
Reverend
John
Peter
Mannenschmidt
,
who
performed
the
baptism
referenced
in the
Fraktur
, was the
first
pastor
of
four
German
Reformed
churches
in the
Mahoning
Valley
between
1807
and
1837
.
