Description
This
tall-case
clock
features
simple
but
elegant
ornamentation
,
including
a
delicately-scrolled
pediment
. The
pattern
(decorated
oval
ornament
above
the
clock
face)
is
inlaid
with an
urn
and
flower
, a
popular
classical
motif
. The
mahogany
and
cherry
case
is
accented
with a
rich
maple
veneer
and
inlay
. The
clock
measures
11
" by
20
" by
105
"
(28
by
50
by
266
cm)
. In the
Federal
period
(1780-1820)
, the
tall-case
clock
was the
most
expensive
item
in the
household
.
It
was
displayed
in the
parlor
,
where
the
family
did
most
of its
entertaining
.
Although
tall-case
clocks
remained
popular
into the
mid-19th
century
,
less
expensive
wall
or
shelf
clocks
eventually
gained
favor
.
Samuel
Best
, was the
most
successful
member
of a
family
of
skilled
artisans
who
from
England
.
Having
learned
his
trade
from his
father
, he
established
a
business
in
Cincinnati
in
1802
,
working
out
of a
log
house
. There he
assembled
and
repaired
watches
and
clocks
and
made
such
items
as
silver
tumblers
,
milk
and
soup
ladles
,
teaspoons
,
sugar
spoons
,
watch
seals
, and
keys
.
During
his
career
,
Samuel
Best
made
approximately
40
clocks
.
