Springfield
City
Building
,
shown
in this
photograph
,
is
located
on the
west
side
of
Fountain
Avenue
between
Washington
and
High
Streets
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
.
It
houses
the
Clark
County
Historical
Society's
Heritage
Center
Museum
and the
Fisher
Family
Library
and
Archives
, as
well
as the
Clark
County
Veterans
Services
Center
and
Java
House
coffee
shop
. The
City
Building
was
constructed
between
1888
and
1890
at a
cost
of
$250,000
.
It
was the
fifth
structure
built
to
house
Springfield's
market
trade
. The
first
was
built
in
1826
on
North
Street
just
west
of
Fountain
Avenue
(then
called
West
Street)
; a
second
building
was
constructed
in
1827
on
West
Street
near
the
old
State
Theatre
.
Another
was
built
in
1832
and then in
1848
a
brick
market
house
was
built
on the
southeast
corner
of
Fountain
and
High
. That
market
remained
in
use
until
the
construction
of the
City
Building
and
Market
pictured
here. The
massive
Richardson
Romanesque
structure
was
designed
by
Springfield
architect
Charles
Cregar
,
who
also
designed
the
Arcade
(1883)
,
St
.
Raphael's
Church
(1897)
, and
St
.
John's
Lutheran
Church
(1897)
.
Along
with the
lower-level
market
space
, the
building
housed
a
council
chamber
with a
coffered
ceiling
,
octagonal
dome
,
walnut
trim
, and
stained
glass
windows
; and a
1,200-seat
auditorium
with
stenciled
walls
, a
painted
ceiling
,
horseshoe
balcony
, and
stained
glass
windows
. The
building
boasts
two
towers
. The
east
tower
is
taller
,
150
feet
as
opposed
to
125
feet
for the
west
, and
houses
an
eight-foot
diameter
clock
first
installed
in
1924
. The
pyramidal
tops
of the
towers
had been
removed
in the
1970s
, but were
restored
during
the
2000
renovation
. This
photograph
is
from the
book
Springfield
Illustrated
,
which
provides
a
written
and
photographic
profile
of the
city
. The
photographs
include
residences
of
prominent
citizens
,
schools
,
churches
,
businesses
, and
street
views
. The
book
is

pages
