This
example
of
chenille
embroidery
depicts
the
Biblical
story
of
Christ
meeting
the
woman
at the
well
.
It
measures
18
by
15
inches
(45.72
by
38.1
cm)
.
Sister
Julia
Chatfield
,
who
founded
the
Ursuline
community
in
Brown
County
,
created
this
piece
in
1850
.
Chenille
embroidery
uses
a
special
fuzzy
thread
. The
name
comes
from the
French
word
for
caterpillar
,
due
to the
resemblance
of the
thread
to the
hairy
insect
.
Fine
examples
of
chenille
embroidery
resemble
paintings
on
velvet
. A
native
of
England
,
Julia
Chatfield
(1809-1878)
was
raised
in the
Anglican
Church
. She
attended
an
Ursuline
boarding
school
in
northern
France
to
complete
her
education
. She
converted
to
Catholicism
,
which
caused
a
permanent
break
with her
family
. She
entered
the
Ursuline
order
and
took
her
final
vows
in
1837
.
Later
, she
decided
to
become
a
missionary
to
America
, and in
1845
, she
led
eleven
Ursuline
sisters
to
Ohio
. The
Bishop
of the
Diocese
of
Cincinnati
gave
the
nuns
a
wooded
tract
of
approximately
400
acres
in
Brown
County
,
about
fifty
miles
east
of
Cincinnati
,
where
they
established
a
school
. The
Ursulines
had a
reputation
as
excellent
educators
and
girls
came
from
all
over
the
United
States
to
attend
the
academy
.
