J
.
Lausche
proclaimed

.
Young
Day
" in
Ohio
. On that
day
a
celebration
was
held
in
Fremont
that
culminated
in the
dedication
of
Fremont's
Water
Works
Park
as
Rodger
W
.
Young
Memorial
Park
.
Young
was
awarded
the
Medal
of

for his
heroic
actions
in
World
War
II
.
Rodger
Wilton
Young
(1918-1943)
was
born
in
Tiffin
and
later
moved
to
Clyde
with his
family
. He
joined
Company
B
of the
148th
Infantry
(the
Fremont
Company)
of the
Ohio
National
Guard
in
January
of
1938
. In
October
1940
the
unit
was
activated
as
part
of the
37th
Infantry
Division
under
Major
General
Robert
Beightler
.
Young
was a
sergeant
and
squad
leader
when
the
company
left
for the
South
Pacific
. The
unit
first
went
to the
Fiji
Islands
and then to
New
Guinea
.
Concerned
that his
poor
hearing
would
jeopardize
his
squad
,
Young
asked
to be
demoted
back
to the
rank
of
private
and
relinquish
his
leadership
role
. On
July
31
,
1943
, his
squad
was
pinned
down
by a
hidden
Japanese
machine
gun
nest
protecting
the
Munda
airstrip
on
New
Guinea
.
Young
,
wounded
by the
initial
burst
of
fire
,
spotted
the
location
of the
nest
.
Firing
his
rifle
and
attracting
the
fire
of the
enemy
, he
crept
forward
and was
wounded
a
second
time
.
When
he was
close
enough
, he
began
throwing
hand
grenades
and was
hit
again
and
killed
.
Through
his
efforts
, his
squad
was
able
to
withdraw
with
no
additional
losses
. For this
action
,
Young
was
posthumously
awarded
the
Medal
of
Honor
in
January
1944
.
