This
photograph
shows
the
residence
of
Pearl
Preston
Crabill
,
located
at
818
North
Fountain
Avenue
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
. The
Crabill
family
is
one
of the
oldest
in
Clark
County
.
David
and
Barbara
Crabill
left
Virginia's
Shenandoah
Valley
in
1808
and
traveled
to
Clark
County
(then
Champaign
County)
by
way
of
Pittsburgh
,
Wheeling
, and
Zanesville
. They
arrived
with
little
money
, but
eventually
acquired
270
acres
of
land
in
Moorefield
Township
.
David's
son
,
Thomas
became
one
of the
largest
landowners
in the
area
.
Pearl
Preston
Crabill
was a
grandson
of
Thomas
. He
received
a
degree
in
mechanical
engineering
from
Ohio
State
University
in
1900
and
went
to
work
with the
Foos
Gas
Engine
Company
. In
1907
he
founded
the
Central
Brass
Fixture
Works
of
Springfield
with
James
Turner
.
Crabill
designed
the
first
commercially-used
automobile
bumper
and his
company
specialized
in their
manufacture
for
many
years
.
Early
automobiles
did
not
come
equipped
with
bumpers
.
Following
Pearl's
death
in
1953
, his
widow
Bertha
donated
their
home
to
Wittenberg
College
. This
photograph
is
from
Art
Work
of
Springfield
,
Ohio
,
published
by
Gravure
Illustration
Co
. in
1927
. The
61
plates
in the
volume
provide
views
of
buildings
and
other
locations
throughout
the
city
including
the
Clark
County
Memorial
Building
,
Warder
Public
Library
,
Snyder
Park
, and
Greenwood
Hunt
and
Polo
Club
.
It
measures
