Description
Bell
Brothers
Pottery
was
one
of the
many
manufacturing
companies
attracted
to
Findlay
by the
offer
of
free
or
cheap
natural
gas
during
the
gas
boom
of the
late
19th
century
. The
company
became
the
first
pottery
west
of the
Ohio
River
when
it
opened
in
July
1889
. The
company
produced
stoneware
and
finer
porcelain
. By
1890
there were
200
people
employed
day
and
night
and the
pottery
expanded
due
to the
number
of
orders
.
Production
was
interrupted
in
1893
for
lack
of
orders
,
fires
and
storms
. By
July
12
,
1900
the
factory
was in
full
operation
in a
new
brick
building
. From
1900-1904
the
plant
was
beset
by
troubles
brought
on by
shortages
of
coal
and
clay
from
England
as
well
as the
death
of
William
Bell
. The
company
moved
to
Columbus
in
1904
when
the
gas
in
Findlay
played
out
. This
photograph
is
included
in
Findlay
Illustrated
,
published
by
H
.
R
.
Page
and
Company
in
1889
. The
complete
volume
is
62
pages
long
and
measures
11
by
13.5
inches
(27.94
by
34.29
cm)
.
