Description
The
nest
and
eggs
of the
Baltimore
Oriole
served
as
Plate
I
of The
Illustrations
of
Nests
and
Eggs
of the
Birds
of
Ohio
.
Eliza
Shulze's
rendering
of the
nest
was
based
on a
nest
taken
from an
elm
branch
found
on a
village
sidewalk
in
1874
. The
plate
measures
17.3
"
x
15.4
"
(44
x
39
cm)
. This
image
was
taken
for
Timeline
, an
illustrated
magazine
published
bimonthly
by the
Ohio
Historical
Society
. The
book
was
created
by the
Nelson
E
.
Jones
family
of
Circleville
,
Ohio
. The
printing
of the
lithographic
images
was
done
by the
Kreb's
Lithographic
Company
and the
text
was
printed
by the
Robert
Clarke
Company
of
Cincinnati
.
Genevieve
Jones
had a
childhood
dream
of
creating
a
multi-part
book
that
illustrated
the
nests
and
eggs
of
Ohio
birds
as a
complementary
volume
to
J
.
J
.
Audubon's
Birds
of
America
. She
started
the
book
in
1879
. Her
brother
Howard
Jones
collected
the
nests
and
eggs
and
wrote
the
text
for the
book
. Her
father
Nelson
E
.
Jones
paid
for the
book's
publication
, and her
friend
Eliza
Shulze
helped
with the
first
drawings
and the
hand
coloring
of the
plates
.
After
parts
one
and
two
were
completed
,
Genevieve
died
of
typhoid
fever
. As a
memorial
to her
daughter
,
Genevieve's
mother
,
Virginia
Jones
,
taught
herself
the
lithographic
technique
and
completed
the
illustrations
for the
book
. This
copy
of the
book
is
especially
significant
because
it
belonged
to
Virginia
Jones
and
thus
contains
Genevieve's
original
work
as
well
as the
best
of
Mrs
.
Jones
'
work
.
Since
there were
many
colorists
and the
plates
were not
signed
,
it
is
uncertain
who
actually
did
the
coloring
in
other
sets
. This
set
of
two
volumes
was
exhibited
in the
Chicago
World's
Fair
,
where
it
was
awarded
a
special
bronze
medal
.
