. and
is
believed
to have been
taken
shortly
after
the
completion
of the
National
McKinley
Birthplace
Memorial
in
1917
.
Butler
was the
driving
force
in
establishing
the
memorial
in
Niles
. He
conceived
the
idea
shortly
after
McKinley's
death
in
1901
and by
1911
had
obtained
a
Congressional
charter
to
form
an
association
and had
begun
fundraising
in
earnest
. A
subscription
program
was
established
and
Butler
made
the
first
donation
of
$5,000
on
May
17
,
1911
. He also
served
as the
first
president
of the
association's
board
of
trustees
.
Built
of
white
Georgian
marble
, the
structure
consists
of
two
wings
joined
by an
open-air
Italianate
court
of
honor
, at the
center
of
which
stands
a
thirteen-foot-tall
marble
sculpture
of
President
William
McKinley
. In
addition
, the
front
facade
and
perimeter
are
supported
by
28
Doric
columns
.
One
wing
of the
structure
houses
a
museum
and
auditorium
; the
McKinley
Memorial
Library
occupies
the
other
half
of the
building
.
Joseph
G

Butler
,
Jr
.
(1840-1927)
was a
native
of
Niles
and
boyhood
friend
of
William
McKinley
. In
fact
,
according
to
Butler's
autobiography
he and
another
boy
once
saved
10
year
old
William
from
drowning
while
they were
all
swimming
in a
local
creek
.
Later
,
Butler
would
serve
as a
respected
leader
in the
steel
industry
who
maintained
valuable
contacts
in the
state
and
federal
governments
,
including
McKinley
. He
campaigned
for
McKinley
during
both
of his
presidential
runs
and was
one
of the
last
local
supporters
to
see
the
President
in
Canton
as he
prepared
to
leave
for his
fatal
visit
to
Buffalo
. In
addition
to
founding
the
National
McKinley
Birthplace
Memorial
in
Niles
and the
Butler
Institute
of
American
Art
in
Youngstown
, he
organized
fundraising
for the
McKinley
Memorial
In
Canton
, the
Youngstown
Public
Library
, and
St
.
Elizabeth's
Hospital
in
Youngstown
.
William
McKinley
(1843-1901)
, the
twenty-fifth
president
of the
United
States
, was
born
in
Niles
,
Ohio
. He
enlisted
in the
army
at the
outbreak
of the
Civil
War
and,
after
being
mustered
out
,
studied
law
and
opened
a
law
office
in
Canton
,
Ohio
.
McKinley
served
in the
U.S
.
Congress
for
14
years
, and
became
president
in
1897
,
largely
due
to the
influence
of
Marcus
Hanna
,
boss
of the
Cleveland
political
machine
.
McKinley
was
most
noted
for his
foreign
policy
and the
conduct
of the
Spanish-American
War
in
1898
.
It
was
during
McKinley's
administration
that the
U.S
.
acquired
its
first
overseas
possessions
in the
Philippines
,
Guam
, and
Puerto
Rico
. He was
re-elected
in
1900
, but was
assassinated
by
anarchist
Leon
Czolgosz
in
1901
. His
running
mate
,
Theodore
Roosevelt
, then
became
president
.
