decorating
committee
. The
two
are
admiring
Bates's
enamel
mural

painted
in

for the
newly
expanded
and
remodeled
main
reading
room
. This
photograph
measures

Bates
(1904-1994)
, a
long-time
member
of the
faculty
of the
Cleveland
Institute
of
Art
,
specialized
in
enamel
work
and was
nationally
recognized
for his
achievements
in the
field
.
Bates
pursued
his
art
education
at the
Massachusetts
School
of
Art
. He
moved
to
Cleveland
in
1926
and
joined
the
faculty
of the
Cleveland
School
of
Art
.
During
his
forty-three
years
at the
institute
, he
taught
every
class
there,
including
the
required
course
in
basic
design
. He also
taught
advanced
courses
in
enameling
. He
became
professor
emeritus
in
1971
. In
1946
he was
awarded
first
prize
in a
national
enameling
competition
. His
works
have been
displayed
in
many
museums
and were
featured
in
one-man
shows
in
Brooklyn
and
Chicago
. In
1987
the
National
Society
of
Enamelists
honored
him with the
title
Dean
of
American
Enamelists
.
Janet
Cheheyl
of
Lakewood
,
Ohio
served
for
24
years
as a
trustee
of the
Lakewood
Public
Library
(1954-1978)
. A
graduate
of
Wellesley
College
, she
became
the
first
woman
to be
elected
president
of the
board
in
1961
and
held
that
office
for
10
years
.
Cheheyl
also
served
as
secretary
to the
board
in
1955
and
1956
,
second
vice
president
from
1957-1959
, and
first
vice
president
in
1960
. She
died
in
1986
.
