Safe

Lock
Company
of
Hamilton
,
Ohio
,
shows
the
company's
manufacturing
plant
around
1890
.
It
measures

. For
many
years
Hamilton
was
known
as "the
safe
capital
of the
world.
"
Gustav
Mosler
(1816-1874)
, an
Austrian
newspaper
editor
,
immigrated
to
Cincinnati
,
Ohio
in the
late
1840s
. In
1867
, he and a
partner
,
Fred
Bahman
,
founded
Mosler-Bahman
Safe
Company
on
Pearl
Street
in
Cincinnati
. The
company
was
soon
renamed
Mosler
Safe
Company
and
moved
to
larger
quarters
on
Elm
Street
with a
new
factory
situated
on
Front
Street
.
After
Gustav
died
in
1874
, his
sons
Julius
,
Moses
, and
William
took
over
the
business
. The
company
became
incorporated
under
the
name
Mosler
Bank
Safe
Company
, and in the
1880s
it
continued
to
grow
and
prosper
,
establishing
branch
offices
in
many
large
cities
. In
1890
, the
year
of
Julius
'
death
, the
company
built
a
300,000-square-foot
factory
in
Hamilton
.
Moses
and
William
Mosler
continued
to
run
the
company
after
their
brother's
death
. In the
early
twentieth
century
they
built
the
first
fire-resistant
safe
and by the
1940s
they had
developed
the
first
drive-in
banking
system
. In the
1950s
Mosler
built
a
special
Jack-in-the-Box
safe
in the
National
Archives
Building
in
Washington
,
D.C
. in
which
the
Declaration
of
Independence
, the
Constitution
, and the
Bill
of
Rights
were
displayed
. The
company
went
bankrupt
and
closed
at the
end
of the
twentieth
century
.
