depicts
Cincinnati
artist
Mary
Louise
McLaughlin
in her
studio
. She
is
seated
in
front
of a
self-portrait
.
McLaughlin
(1847-1939)
was
one
of the
first
female
art
potters
in the
United
States
. She
attended
the
McMicken
School
of
Design
in
Cincinnati
(later
the
Cincinnati
Art
Academy)
and
exhibited
her
wares
at the
Philadelphia
Exposition
in
1876
. She
experimented
with the
long-secret
process
of
limoges
faience
, a
method
of
decorating
china
with
opaque
colored
glazes
. Her
method
received
an
honorable
mention
at the
1878
Paris
Universal
Exposition
. She
founded
the
Cincinnati
Pottery
Club
in
1879
. The
Pottery
Club
met
and
worked
at
Rookwood
Pottery
from
1881
until
1883
,
when
they were
banished
from
Rookwood
. For a
number
of
years
,
McLaughlin
shifted
her
energies
to
other
media
,
including
woodcarving
,
metalworking
,
painting
, and
etching
, but
returned
to
pottery
in
1898
. Her
new
line
was
known
as
Losantiware
, a
name
derived
from
Losantiville
, the
original
name
of
Cincinnati
. Her
Losantiware
was
exhibited
at the
1900
Paris
Universal
Exposition
and at the
1901
Pan-American
Exposition
,
where
it
won
a
bronze
medal
.
McLaughlin
only
made
Losantiware
for
five
more
years
, as
few
of the
pieces
were of
salable
quality
and the
high
heat
necessary
to
create
Losantiware
made
the
kiln
susceptible
to
explosion
. She
devoted
the
remainder
of her
life
to
painting
and
drawing
.
