Menlo
Road
in
Shaker
Heights
,
Ohio
, on
April
18
,
1956
.
Shaker
Heights
is
known
for its
architecture
,
usually
of the
grand
boulevard
estates
. There are also
more
modest
neighborhoods
,
so
that,
according
to the
developers
,
families
would
start
in the
modest
homes
and
work
their
way
to the
estates
. The
early
settlers
of
Shaker
Heights
shared
the
future
area
of
Shaker
Heights
,
nicknamed
"The
Valley
of
God's
Pleasure
" with the
North
Union
Shaker
Colony
,
led
by
Ralph
Russell
. The
Shaker
Colony
disbanded
in
1889
, and the
land
remained
mainly
rural
until
the
early
twentieth
century
. In
1905
,
two
brothers
,
M
.
J
. and
O
.
P
.
Van
Sweringen
,
began
acquiring
land
and
planning
for their
dream
garden
city
. The
Van
Sweringens
'
enforced
strict
zoning
and
architectural
restrictions
,
designed
an
organic
street
plan
, and
planned
for an
electric
rail
line
that would
transport
businessmen
from
Shaker
Heights
to
downtown
Cleveland
. With
only
few
homes
and
one
school
built
,
Shaker
Heights
became
a
village
in
1912
. By the
time
Shaker
Heights
became
a
city
in
1931
, the
inner
ring
suburb
was
lauded
for
excellent
municipal
services
and
schools
. An
important
part
of
Shaker
Heights
culture
was the
development
of
Shaker
Square
, a
premier
shopping
area
featuring
a
theater
and
high-class
retail
stores
. As with
many
mostly-white
inner
ring
suburbs
,
Shaker
Heights
began
seeing
an
influx
of
African
American
residents
in the
late
1950s
. The
schools
,
city
government
, and
community
associations
decided
to
take
a
proactive
approach
to
potential
racial
unrest
in the
city
.
Some
measures
included
encouraging
white
residents
to
remain
in or to
purchase
houses
in
unbalanced
areas
through
short
term
loans
;
discussions
among
all
residents
at
community
association
meetings
;
busing
to
maintain
racial
balance
in
schools
; and the
creation
of the
Fund
for the
Future
and
other
city
departments
responsible
for
monitoring
and
preserving
racial
balance
throughout
the
city
.
Through
all
the
changes
,
Shaker
Heights
remained
a
planned
community
into the
twenty-first
century-physically
and
sociologically
.
