Anne
Eastman
,
is
commemorated
in this
oil-on-canvas
portrait
,
which
measures

. The
painting
is
part
of the
library's
archives
,
which
is
open
by
appointment
and
which
maintains
a
wide
range
of
materials
documenting
the
institution's
history
.
Eastman
began
her
career
at the
library
in
1892
as an
apprentice
earning
twelve
and a
half
cents
an
hour
. In
1894
, she
moved
to the
West
Side
Branch
and
became
the
first
editor
of the
Open
Shelf
, a
publication
containing
reviews
of
new
books
and
other
information
. She
left
Cleveland
in
1895
to
take
a
better
position
with the
Dayton
Public
Library
, but
returned
a
year
later
when
director
William
Howard
Brett
convinced
the
library's
board
to
re-hire
her as
Vice
Librarian
(equivalent
to
deputy
director)
. She
became
Brett's
second
in
command
,
overseeing
many
of the
library's
activities
,
including
special
service
to
under-served
populations
.
Service
to the
blind
began
in
1903
.
When
Brett
died
in
1918
, the
board
unanimously
selected
Eastman
to
succeed
him as
Librarian
, a
position
she
held
until
1938
.
Linda
Anne
Eastman
was
born
in
Oberlin
,
Ohio
, to
William
Harvey
and
Sarah
Ann
Redrup
Eastman
.
When
she was
seven
years
old
, her
mother
died
and the
family
moved
to
Cleveland
.
Linda
graduated
with
honors
from
West
High
School
.
After
completing
a
teacher-training
course
at
Cleveland
Normal
School
,
Eastman
taught
for
several
years
until
she
decided
that
library
work
was her
true
calling
. She
died
in
1963
. The
library's
Eastman
Reading
Garden
and
Eastman
Branch
are
named
in her
honor
.
