Limestone
quarries
have
existed
on
Kelley's
Island
since
1833
.
Limestone
was a
popular
building
material
, and
lime
was also
used
for
agricultural
purposes
. The
stone
quarried
at
Kelley's
Island
was
brought
by
rail
to the
docks
,
loaded
onto
ships
, and then
transported
to
places
like
Cleveland
and
Detroit
. In
1886
the
company
consolidated
all
the
quarries
on
Kelley's
Island
,
controlling
almost
two-fifths
of the
land
of the
island
. They also
operated
a
cooperage
(barrel-making
operation)
and
lime
kilns
to
support
their
enterprises
, and
provided
boarding
houses
for their
employees
. In
1908
the
quarries
briefly
shut
down
,
only
to
reopen
a
few
months
later
. In
1940
they
shut
down
again
, not to
reopen
until
the
1960s
under
new
ownership
. By
1972
,
however
, they were
closed
again
.
Kelley's
Island
Lime
and
Transport
Company
donated
its
land
for
public
use
, and
it
became
part
of
Lake
Erie
Islands
State
Park
.
