This
photograph
shows
the
residence
of
J
.
S
.
Harshman
,
located
on the
northeast
corner
of
Harshman
and
Park
streets
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
.
Jonathan
S
.
Harshman
and his
wife
Mary
moved
to this
house
in the
early
1920s
.
Mary
was the
daughter
of
Henry
Snyder
and
it
was her
uncles
,
David
and
John
Snyder
,
who
donated
200
hundred
acres
of
land
for a
park
to the
city
in
1895
.
Harshman
Boulevard
runs
along
the
east
side
of
Snyder
Park
, and this
house
was
one
of the
earliest
to be
built
in the
area
.
Jonathan
S
.
Harshman
served
as
president
and
vice-president
of
several
different
companies
. His
primary
interest
,
however
, was in
electric
railways
. In the
late
1800s
and
early
1900s
Springfield
was a
thriving
industrial
center
and
served
as a
major
hub
of the
interurban
railroads
that
connected
many
of
Ohio's
cities
. At the
height
of their
use
,
125
electric
cars
would
enter
and
leave
the
city
every
day
.
Harshman
was
involved
in
securing
the
right-of-way
for the
Dayton
,
Springfield
&
Urbana
Electric
Railroad
and
served
as the
company's
vice
president
and
president
. He also
served
as
president
of
Columbus
,
London
&
Springfield
Electric
Railway
,
Springfield
&
Western
Electric
Railway
Company
,
Urbana
,
Bellefontaine
&
Northern
Railway
Company
, and the
Columbus
,
Delaware
&
Marion
Electric
Railway
Company
. The
last
electric
train
ran
on
October
29
,
1938
,
ten
years
after
Harshman's
death
. This
photograph
is
from
Art
Work
of
Springfield
,
Ohio
,
published
by
Gravure
Illustration
Co
. in
1927
. The
61
plates
in the
volume
provide
views
of
buildings
and
other
locations
throughout
the
city
including
the
Clark
County
Memorial
Building
,
Warder
Public
Library
,
Snyder
Park
, and
Greenwood
Hunt
and
Polo
Club
.
It
