titled
"
Women
of the
Ku
Klux
Klan.
" The
ladies
'
auxiliary
of the
Akron
chapter
submitted
this
float
for
Akron's
centennial
parade
.
Signs
on the
sides
of the
float
proclaim
"
Protestantism
" "
Womanhood
" and "
Public
Schools.
" The
Ku
Klux
Klan
had a
strong
presence
in
Akron
in the
early
1920s
, and
even
had
majority
control
of the
school
board
for a
time
.
Some
of the
support
for the
Klan
came
from
white
Southerners
who
had
migrated
to
Akron
to
seek
employment
in the
rubber
industry
. A
strong
anti-Klan
movement
in
Akron
,
led
by
Wendell
Willkie
,
who
was then an
attorney
for
Firestone
Tire
and
Rubber
Company
,
managed
to
regain
control
of the
school
board
.
Soon
after
,
interest
and
membership
in the
Klan
waned
. The
Ku
Klux
Klan
, a
white
supremacist
secret
society
, was
especially
active
in
Ohio
and the
United
States
in the
1920s
. The
group's
attention
was
directed
not
only
at
African
Americans
but also
toward
immigrants
(many
non-Protestants
from
Eastern
and
Southern
Europe)
and
trade
unions
.
Despite
the
opposition
of
religious
and
minority
organizations
,
Klan
members
were
elected
to
political
positions
in
several
cities
and
often
held
parades
,
rallies
, and
social
events
.
