. The
photograph

Kurt
Masur
was
born
on
July
18
,
1927
in
Germany
. He
studied
piano
,
composition
, and
conducting
at the
Music
College
of
Leipzig
. He
accepted
his
first
major
orchestral
appointment
in
1955
, as
conductor
of the
Dresden
Philharmonic
,
returning
to
opera
in
1958
as
general
director
of
music
at the
Mecklenburg
State
Theater
of
Schwerin
. His
American
debut
came
in
1974
when
he
led
the
Cleveland
Orchestra
, and he
holds
an
honorary
degree
from the
Cleveland
Institute
of
Music
. He
joined
the
New
York
Philharmonic
in
1981
. In
June
1998
,
Masur
led
the
Philharmonic's
first
concerts
in the
People's
Republic
of
China
. In
1991
Masur
became
the
music
director
at the
New
York
Philharmonic
and
led
them to their
first
ever
performances
in
Poland
. The
dream
of a
conservatory
in
Cleveland
,
Ohio
became
a
reality
in
April
1920
when
a
small
group
of
founders
each
contributed
$1000
to
establish
a "
school
of
music
where
every
type
of
student
could
find
opportunity
for the
best
music
education.
"
Temporary
studios
at the
Hotel
Statler
sufficed
until
a
facility
was
found
.
Faculty
listed
in the
initial
year
of
instruction
include
Cleveland
Orchestra
members
Louis
Edlin
,
violin
, and
Victor
de
Gomez
,
violoncello
.
Nathan
Fryer
, a
pupil
of
Leschetizky
, was
appointed
as
director
of the
department
of
piano
and
ensemble
.
Instruction
was
provided
for
students
of
all
ages
and
musical
abilities
, from
beginner
to
advanced
.
