Description
On
December
17
,
1903
, at
Kitty
Hawk
,
North
Carolina
, this
camera
recorded
the
first
successful
flight
of a
powered
heavier-than-air
craft
. In
1899
,
Orville
and
Wilbur
Wright
, of
Dayton
,
Ohio
began
trying
to
solve
basic
problems
of
flight
with their
usual
thoroughness
and
attention
to
detail
. The
Wright
Brothers
kept
meticulous
written
and
photographic
records
of
each
step
towards
powered
flight
.
Shortly
before
the
flight
,
Orville
set
the
camera
on its
tripod
and
focused
on the
area
where
he
expected
the
machine
to
lift
into the
air
.
John
T
.
Daniels
, a
member
of the
Kill
Devil
Life
Saving
Station
,
actually
snapped
the
picture
at a
shutter
speed
of
1/50th
of a
second
.
Orville
developed
the
negative
and
printed
the
picture
after
his
return
to
Dayton
.
Years
later
,
Orville
gave
the
camera
to his
nephew
Horace
Wright
,
who
expressed
and
interest
in
photography
.
Horace
Wright
donated
the
camera
and
equipment
to
Carillon
Historical
Park
in
1984
. The
Korona
V
5x7
"
view
camera
, with
rising
front
, was
manufactured
by the
Gundlach
Optical
Company
,
Rochester
,
New
York
.
Turner-Reich
produced
the
brass
mounted
anastigmatic
lens
,
serial
#51760
,
manufactured
May
14
,
1895
. The
camera
body
has a
mahogany
frame
,
front
, and
bottom
; the
exterior
box
is
covered
with
black
leatherette
.
Fittings
are
plated
non-ferrous
metal
,
probably
brass
. There
is
a
three-legged
adjustable
tripod
associated
with, and
original
to the
camera
. The
camera
produces
a
5x7
"
negative
on a
glass
plate
;
squeezing
the
attached
rubber
bulb
operates
the
pneumatic
shutter
.
