soldiers
stationed
at
Fort
Laurens
. This
artifact
is
evidence
of
military
occupation
at
Fort
Laurens
during
1778
and
1779
.
Fort
Laurens
, the
only
Revolutionary
War
fort
in
Ohio
, was
built
in
1778
on the
banks
of the
Tuscarawas
River
near
present-day
Bolivar
. The
site
was
excavated
in
1972
,
1973
, and
1986
by
R
.
Michael
Gramly
,
contract
archaeologist
for the
Ohio
Historical
Society
.
General
Lachlan
McIntosh
authorized
the
construction
of
Fort
Laurens
in
1778
to
serve
as a
launching
area
for an
attack
on the
British
in
Detroit
and to
protect
the
area's
American
Indian
tribes
,
who
remained
neutral
. The
fort
was
named
for
Henry
Laurens
,
president
of the
Continental
Congress
. The
150
men
and
women
at
Fort
Laurens
survived
a
winter
siege
by
British
Captain
Henry
Bird
and
Simon
Girty
, a
Pennsylvania
frontiersman
who
supported
the
British
.
After
second
siege
in
August
1789
,
Fort
Laurens
was
abandoned
.
